Having spent much of our Buckle & Boots coverage on our Danish friends Glimtvis, it is time to cross the border into Sweden to reacquaint ourselves with one of our favourite Nordic artists. Over the years #TEAMw21 have seen many acts come and go from our genre, one particularly missed combo was the Swedish duo Fifth Floor. They had an ear for a melody, drama in a song and at times they just knew how to have fun whilst maybe "Sipping On A Coke!"
Since their split 50% of the band, Tilly Christiansson has continued to release music, and if you have not heard "Whiskey Hotel You" then please immediately rectify the hole in your musical appreciation - then while you are at it take a listen to Tilly's marvellous new single "Sunday Driving" which definitely has a touch in it of what made Fifth Floor such great fun.
"Sunday Driving" has more in common with the irreverence of "Sipping On a Coke" and finds Tilly in a somewhat carefree mood. The opening is a swathe of guitars both electric and acoustic, which set a most summery upbeat mood.
"Little wren woke me up early in the morning
Sun was out, shining bright, clock was showing 4 AM
I decided there and then to get out of this comfy bed
This day ain’t made for sleeping
And I ain’t working either"
Tilly is far too good a lyricist, and what you can't tell from the written word is how each line is delivered in sections really putting the emphasis on each part. It gives the whole song a sense of rhythm so is more
Little wren
Woke me up
Early in the morning"
It is only on the final line that she breaks this convention, with the line that takes us into to the chorus and shines light on her carefree mood, where she is going to take the car in her own way, at her own pace.
"I’m Sunday driving on a Tuesday
Sorry not sorry if I’m in your way’
Cause I ain’t speeding up, no, not today
Guess you’re gonna have to overtake (or not)
I’m Sunday driving on a Tuesday"
The second verse matches the cover picture, with Tilly cutting quite the figure in her shades in the front seat of her car with the roof down. Fun fact in case you were curious "Canola" seems to be a sort of "Rapeseed" that gets made into oil.
"Top’s down, shades are on, cruising through canola fields
Cup holder with soda cans, cooler with the refill
Lilac scent is on the wind, I know lying is a sin
But I ain’t telling no one
Where I am or where I’m going"
The sheer perfection of the day is summed up in the bridge.
"Before the day is over
I’ll know heaven’s so much closer
Yeah, it’s all the eye can see
So come take a ride with me"
Such is Tilly's skill she even provides an alternate chorus, which might not please you if you were stuck behind her but would no doubt be a lot more fun if you were in the passenger seat!
"I’m Sunday driving on a Tuesday
You best believe I’m slowing down the pace
While everybody’s trying to win a race
I’m gonna teach ’em how to pump the breaks
I’m Sunday driving on a Tuesday, Tuesday
I’m Sunday driving on a Tuesday, Tuesday"
This could well be the summer anthem that we can all get behind as we ditch work and just take a day to appreciate life.
