SINGLE REVIEW: REBECCA JAYNE - ONE THING

One of the better things to happen in 2025 was the reemergence of Rebecca Jayne with her single "Following The Sunshine", and she is ready to start 2026 with "One Thing", equally impressive but less bouncy and optimistic. Produced by Rebecca alongside Jim Cozens and mixed by Sue McMillan this song dates back to 2020 when it was written in twenty minutes, as all the best songs seem to be, yet stayed locked in Rebecca's phone.

It comes with a beautiful simplicity in its recording outlook, there is no unnecessary sound clutter and the results are so much the better for it. The opening is just an acoustic guitar and the odd perfectly placed piano note or two. It creates an ambience in which Rebecca opens up her heart and it is safe to say that it has been broken.

"I’ve had a hard time adjusting to the changing world

It’s a been a long time coming and my heart still hurts

But I’m learning to live through the most of it

But you’re the one thing that I miss"

Rebecca's voice lingers over some of the words, immediately convincing that this is totally heartfelt. The end of the verse just sees a somewhat softly wailing pedal steel appear, which perfectly captures the mood.

The chorus equally sees Rebecca in top notch vocal form, like a gentle songbird she injects feeling by slightly elongating some of the lyrics. The four lines see a total transformation from a resigned confidence to resurrecting unresolved feelings.

"Well I heard you’re home

And I think I’m over you

But then I see you’re eyes of blue

And that one thing takes me back to you"

The implicit drama in seeing an ex plays out in the second verse, do they feel the same? The music builds with the arrival of percussion and synth like strings,

"Well I see your smile in a lonely room

And I wonder if something will remind you too

Of happier days in a far off place

Cos it’s something your heart can’t erase"

The exit from the second chorus leads into as gentle an electric guitar solo as you could ever hope and it leads to the crux of all break ups where one person is not quite ready to move on.

"Well I understand that you’re moving on

But there’s something to ask you, now the love has gone

Did you ever really love me as I did for you?

Well some things have changed and some things have not

But one thing I know you are everything I want"

The final line is all the more poignant because it is clearly not going to come true, while at the same time the closing music gradually slows, like a curtain coming down at the end of the play.

The first of what is promised to be a plethora of singles from Rebecca Jayne, if they are all of this standard, they will be more than welcome, and with it hopefully a return to live action.

One Thing is released 2nd January 2026
