Releasing the fourth track from her debut EP "From Caledonia, With Love" is Robyn Red, with "Caledonia ( Looks Good On You)". It is perfectly timed to tie in with her Saturday Night Paddock Stage headline slot at Buckle & Boots which seems destined to be one of the stand out moments of the weekend.
It is easy to see why this release was held back for the Festival weekend as it clearly demonstrates the sort of excitement that we are expecting on the night, furious fast paced drumming, the celtic fiddle and above all Robyn Red clearly relishing her role at front of house.
As identifiable as the red hat on the cover, is the Scottish feel that has been laced through the previous tracks - here it is delivered in spades tying everything together and setting Robyn Red apart from many of her peers.
The opening 13 seconds or so of "Caledonia" is definitely scene setting stuff, inventive percussion joins prominent lead guitar to provide the perfect bed for Robyn's vocals
"You took the test to be here - You gambled with your time
You knew that this is where you wanted to be tonight
I see the light in your eyes, looking like the Isle of Skye
I know you know it too
Caledonia is looking good on you"
Already reasonably fast paced, the chorus turns on the turbo chargers and roars further away, there's an incessant power drum beat that powers this tune along and the fiddle appears as a reminder that we are talking about Scotland.
"I feel it in my bones - I feel it in my boots
I know one thing's for sure
That's that I could go hell for you
I know I'm feeling alright, you're making me look good
You're one hell of a view
Caledonia is looking good on you"
Credulity is somewhat stretched in that fourth line - heaven knows who Robyn must have bumped into if it takes them to make Robyn look good, however we'll let that pass as giddy excitement!!
"You take me higher than the Highlands - with the way you look at me
And I know you're living right just by the way you look tonight
I hear the kick drum baby, I feel the floor shaking
Right on cue, rendezvous
Caledonia is looking good on you"
There are 2 more runs through the chorus, the second seems even more frenetic, if such a thing were possible, with the fiddler working overtime battling to keep up and be heard, something they succeed with on both points. It is a three minute song that seems to whizz by in half the time. so it is easy to see why this has become such a crowd pleaser.
Already the most identifiable Americana performer on the UK circuit this EP should establish that reputation for her music as much as her head wear.
