Releasing the third instalment of her forthcoming EP with her new single "Just Need The WIne" is Robyn Red. Anyone who saw Robyn at either the London or Glasgow C2C's will have seen a most formidable force and will remember this song as the one that had an unusual and somewhat graphic introduction!
The cover shows Robyn in another spectacular outfit, clutching a bottle of wine by the neck in one hand while clasping a hangover inducing overfilled glass by the stem in the other, wearing her inimitable red hat which will even get its own mention in the lyrics.
The single opens at a furious pace, with drums, banjo and fiddle leading the way. The sound incorporates that overall Scottish country feel that has served Robyn well so far, it's another facet that makes her distinctly different from any of her peers.
The lyrics are a light hearted run through alcohol inspired events from initial idea to the inevitable chaos and consequences that need to be addressed the next morning ( or afternoon!).
"I'm drunk but I don't want to go home
I wanna stay out all night with you
Do things we maybe shouldn't do"
We can blame intoxication for the sudden change of mind over the next few lines and the initiation of what probably seems a good idea at the time.
"Oh back to mine, call up all our friends
Starts at 12 o'clock - no front door locked
Just whiskey on the rocks"
The chorus continues the incessant beating rhythm, the fiddle gloriously coming into its own, possibly subliminally paying a cheeky little homage to the Devil in "The Devil Goes Down To Georgia" which would tie in with the lyrics. Next to Robyn's vocals it is the stand out feature of the single.
"I want to go where the devil goes
Want to paint my nails, wear five inch heels
Just need a red hat and I'm ready to go!
I want to do what the good girls don't
I want to bend the rules, don't want to play the fool
Just need the wine to tell me what to do!"
The transitions from verse to chorus to verse happen so fast and seamlessly that there is no time to stand still, much like the drunken night that passes by in a blur after a few "drinking games"
"Wake up in the morning asking what I did
Smashed glass here and there, red wine stained chair
On a table I need to repair!"
It's a rollercoaster ride from beginning to end, with Robyn marshalling events with her authoritative vocal style, the only real let up in pace comes in the final eight seconds as Robyn "Ooohs" as the band winds down.
A successful third part of what looks to be an excellent debut EP.
