SINGLE REVIEW: RHIANNON PAIGE - SHOUT OUT

The biggest issue facing independent artists is always getting your music heard in the first place. It's a game where all the cards seem to be stacked against you, well one artist looking to make a breakthrough is Rhiannon Paige with her new single "Shout Out". If you don't hear it, it won't be for lack of trying, as this single all but explodes out of the speakers.
#TEAMw21 only caught the tail end of Rhiannon's Country Calling set, however the size of the crowd and the warmth of the reception, as she belted out
"Holding Out For A Hero" suggests, that maybe her time is now, and if it is her chance, she's going to grab it with both hands. With lyrics co created with Laura Green and Phil Swan at Patchwork Entertainment, this is defiant cry to be noticed.
Things start in a fairly sedate way, the first verse delivered to just an acoustic guitar, however don't be fooled, for already there is a steel in those vocals. It's Rhiannon reflecting that she is competing in a crowded market place, with its own rules.
"Let the people talk, cause everybody wants to be heard
It's a lonely walk, in a busy overcrowded world
Hush hush, you just gotta play your part
Don't overstep the mark, being smart
Heaven forbid, you step out of line"
The chorus finds Rhiannon at her most forthright, accompanied additionally by the sound of a solitary ominous, thumping drum beat.
"Shout out, who can scream the loudest?
Who can wake the dead?
Or roar like a lioness?
Shout out, I'm tired of the silence
I’m bleeding words unsaid
Who am I trying to impress?
Shout out, hear the preacher speaking

In a world where you have to fight for attention this song now does its level best to grab you by the lapels and make you listen with a sudden burst of volume. The sound is now muscular, beefed up the arrival of guitars, keyboards, percussion and additional backing vocals all joining to make for a most vibrant mix.
It calms, to allow Rhiannon to deliver the second verse, where she airs the frustrations of every independent artist, just wanting to be heard.
"Unapologetically me, cos I just wanna be heard
But I'm playing the game and everybody wants the last word
Here's who's for wishing, talent's here for fishing
What is it I'm missing when I'm giving it all?
So I'll let the voice talk"
The second chorus once more sees the sound awash with instrumentation, Rhiannon seemingly verbally nailing down each line as her intonation enforces how serious she is.
The sound once more drops as Rhiannon pertinently points out one quick fire career path, however surely times should have progressed?
"I keep my body in
While others get it out for the world to see
Sick of hiding who I am
But scared of what they'll think for me"
The first part of the final run of choruses is Rhiannon delivering her vocals to just the beat once more, of that solitary drum, before the remaining choruses are delivered with the full ensemble. It produces a sound that is bold, almost cinematic in its vision, oh for a budget that would have the video complete with Rhiannon walking past roaring lionesses!
With all the talk of "Lionesses", let's hope the England Lionesses adopt "Shout Out" as their own theme tune and roar their way through the Women's World Cup Qualifiers in October
