The opening track from her upcoming album "SOS Texas", sees Marina Rocks on electrifying form with "It's All Messed Above". This is attention grabbing stuff with an urgent bass, guitar and percussion setting the scene for Marina to only entice us in further. This is the sound of Texas at it's most rawkus!
"Well she called him one night
She said "I think I'm gonna die
He said "I'll be there baby, now
Just, just don't cry
He went to her favourite store
He saw the man inside
He said I bought her beer, cigarettes
Man snakes alive!"
All of this is played out over a relentlessly forceful tune
The chorus with Marina singing "It's' all, It's all messed up!" repeatedly gets ever more manic each time it comes round.
Now it must be said that things do a go a bit kooky on the arrival of squirrels in bags, and 2 brothers both called Darrell but apparently this is all based on a true story!
"They were going down the road down the 225
She had a squirrel in her purse, she had evil in her eye
He had his hands on the wheel he was holding on tight
But he never would have guessed what she'd do that night!
From the inside he was looking as she was jumping out
That psycho chick from hell - left the truck with a shout
Now the squirrels in the purse he ain't ever getting out!"
All the way throughout there's a guitar riff that wouldn't seem out of place on many a late 70's new wave record. while Marina somehow keeps the narrative moving along, adding in little vocal repetitions which gives a strange sense of reality.
It is great fun and almost certainly like nothing else you'll hear all year!!
