SINGLE REVIEW: LAKELIN LEMMINGS - 19 AND SINGLE

Showing no signs of letting up after only just releasing her debut EP, comes Lakelin Lemmings with a brand new single "19 and Single". She's heading to the UK for Country Calling and this single should go down a treat as there is an almost Irish lilt in the backing.

If you thought the only difference between the UK and the US was the spelling of the word colour, this single comes as quite a surprise as Lakelin is not singing about wanting to be young free and single, it's more that she's not tied down yet like everyone else around her.

We've already highly praised, Lakelin's ability to vividly capture small town America and this seems like another world - with Lakelin showing that she is more than capable of being independent, waiting before making life's weightier decisions. In a nice turn of events, it's a song that comes out the day before Lakelin officially hits 20.

The opening guitars and mandolins give a distinct Gaelic feel, as Laeklin lays down her solo credentials

"I can dance by myself, and drive my own truck!

I don't have to wonder when he's picking me up

I'm all for Friday night, with the girls

Cos 19 and single, ain't the end of the world!"

The singing of the songs title is the cue for weighty percussion to start, only amplifying the Irishness of things even more.

"I put on my make up and slip on a dress

I do that for me not for anybody else

I look in the mirror and give it a twirl

Cos 19 and single, ain't the end of the world!"

There's more of a sense of spirit in the following verse, of one who is not going to be railroaded by peer pressure into something she is not prepare to do.

"No I ain't gotta rush, I know God's got a plan

I don't need to be with someone just to say that I am

If diamonds are forever, why settle for a pearl

19 and single, ain't the end of the world!"

Lakelin's picture of her hometown

"You'd think my hometown is a fairy tale dream

Everybodies having babies or getting a ring

When my Prince comes along, I''ll give it a whirl

19 and single, ain't the end of the world!"

The bridge reinforces things further, for a second there's a slight waver but Lakelin's sensible head soon reasserts itself.

"I can't lie, though some days it feels like it is

If it ain't real love then tell me

What have I missed?"

The final chorus starts with just Lakelin and an acoustic guitar along with the merest of percussion before closing out on a celebratory band performance.

Lakelin Lemmins will be at Country Calling August 14-16th https://tickets.country-calling.com/
