With the title sounding like something Neil from the Young Ones might say and a musical opening that deliberately evokes the feeling of being in a church almost threatening to head off into a hymn that you can't quite put your finger on is Widnes wonder, Jenny Colquitt's new single "Peace Man". It is only the slightly distorted electronica effects that alert you to the fact that you have not somehow mistuned to Songs of Praise.
Eventually this opening aural soundscape gives way to a more conventional guitar and percussion combination - albeit not for long as Jenny will take us off in many directions on this five minute musical magical mystery tour, all of them well worked, from Pastoral to Pop, Jenny has us covered.
The actual lyrics seem a little darker, touching on areas of grief, and faith, and those who may seek to exploit you for whatever reason at your lowest ebb. Jenny admit to this being an exaggerated version of events but on any given High Street on any given weekend there is always someone to be found promising something.
"Peace man in town yeh he told me his name.
I only gave him a minute of space,
To talk about peace man,
To talk about faith."
Jenny blesses the chorus with the most poppy of melodies, and throws everything at it, drums, keyboards, and guitars all combine to make a fearsome combination.
"It’s a simple thing I’m trying,
I’ll show you if you stay.
Or meet me in the Jesus garden,
We’ll take away your pain.
If you think that Satan’s lying,
We’ll teach you about faith.
We can talk about peace man,
We can talk about faith."
An instrumental break even finds room for a fiddle solo.
The whole thing is pulled together by Jenny's vocals, whether they be calmly retelling her version of events, exploding on the chorus or when they become an outpouring of "oh's" during the final musical break
It all makes for an exhilarating five minute epic showing Jenny at the peak or her musical powers
