Having dealt with one end of the family tree in her last single with a tribute to her son, Jenn Bostic has turned her attentions in the other direction for her latest single, "See You Now", with an appreciative nod towards her mother. Jenn is currently mining a deep seam of inspiration, and this is another classic in the making. With her mother now living with her due to her house being lost during the recent hurricane season, she is getting to share precious time that perhaps she may not otherwise have had.
There is also a distinct difference in sound on this new release with the guitar playing a much more prominent part alongside Jenn's traditional keyboard sound. The opening in fact, is a blend of acoustic guitar with a distorted keyboard sound. When Jenn appears, she's seeing her mother in a completely new light.
"Teaching myself to go slow
So you don't have to catch up
Learning what you already know
Can't pour from an empty cup
Got a whole new grace
Of that version of you
So loving, so kind,
Sorry I was blind
Forgive me for taking my time"
Becoming a parent does change your relationship with your own parents as you view the things they did with a new perspective than that you had as a child.
The chorus is Jenn paying homage, in the most melodious manner, with a chorus so sweet in tone. The word "see" is elongated and a delightful subtle guitar refrain runs through bringing a gentle pop country feeling to the overall sound.
"But I see you now, oh I, see you now
It took tables turning, roles reversing
To look behind the curtain
But I see you now"
The second version deals with how having this new knowledge affects you, there is the small blessing that Jenn has managed to reach this point while there is still time to let her mother know in the most eloquent and musical of ways
"All the things I wish I could take back
Those "Thought I knew everything" years
When I found myself humming that soundtrack
It's a whole new rhythm I hear
If I could only get through
To this version of me
Trying to get what you gave
Trying to be that brave
Didn't mean to make you wait"
The realisation that you might not have known the answers to everything is something of a shock and only when you find yourself repeating history do things somewhat come into focus.
The bridge deals with Jenn seeing beyond just their relationship, that her mother was a person in her own rite before Jenn appeared.
"Who you were before me
As for me, there was no before you
Yeah I heard the stories
I know you told me
But hearing them made a different truth
The closing sees Jenn playing with different ways of approaching the chorus, one is a full blown, giving everything style, adding in some heartfelt additional words, which long time Jenn fans, will know only to well, as to what is being said in these few lines.
"To understand the person
Who took care of me
When the sky was falling down"
The final moments are just Jenn and an acoustic guitar affirming "But, I see you now".
With a superb cover perfectly capturing the pair, it's a pure, feel good song - an absolute must for current or would be parents and for connoisseurs of mighty fine music.
