It is hard to think of another UK Americana artist that can lay claim to releasing quite as many quality singles in a row as Vic Allen. No matter where she ventures she takes with her a great ear for a melody and more often than not will also throw in an equally clever video to support whatever she has created.
Launching with news of a tour this autumn, is her latest single "Ended In a Song" written solely by Vic and produced by Barnabas Shaw who has been behind the controls for the "Bad Weather" and "Wake Up Pretty" as well as much of Vic's debut album.
It comes with a somewhat unusual cover with Vic's face cropped halfway down her nose with her eyes looking skywards while wearing a set of headphones.
A chugging guitar and percussion intro sets the scene for once of Vic's chance encounters.
The verse essentially covers it from start to finish, and it is echoed in Vic's singing, she seems slightly bashful for the first two lines form the attention, while the middle two ran a gamut of emotions, before the final two capture the harsh reality.
"Guess I caught your eye from across the room
Cos you bought me a drink before i even said "Hello" to you
One night turned into something
You were right there then it was nothing
Now I'm sat here crying
Boy I know we are through"
It all leads to an explosion of a chorus, it gives us an idea what Vic might sound like if fronting a rocking combo. It sees Vic rapidly firing out lines, really adding emphasis to certain words. The chorus also come rich with hooks to catch you with.
"Could have ended in a movie, ended in a rush
Boy meets girl, and they end up in love
Ended in a whirlwind finally slowing down
Find out what we wanted in this small town
Whereas that last kiss could have been forever
We tried, we missed, maybe it's better
But it could've ended up with you still holding on
But it ended in a song"
It all ends with the inevitable consequence of being involved with a songwriter!!
The second verse appears over a more percussive and keyboard backdrop, it's a seamless subtle switch after the end of the chorus, giving the song a new overall feel.
The bridge gives us Vic's parting riposte
"Whether you hear this, well I hope it reminds you
That I'm long gone, can put it behind you
All because it makes you lose your mind
Just replay it over and over all the time"
All in all it is bright breezy and another worthy addition to Vic Alle's' unbeaten streak
