SINGLE REVIEW: TORI DARKE - PRETTIEST WRECK

Heading to the UK and Country Calling for her UK debut is Australian Tori Darke, and judging by her new single "Prettiest Wreck" she is going to make quite the impression.

It comes with an opening that throws the aural kitchen sink at the listener, with banjos' guitars and booming drums joining presumably Tori with a "Hey Hey!" in the background. Things subside a little as Tori delivers the opening lines but under each line she delivers, there is riff heavy support

We find Tori post break up, and there's a confusing mixture of emotions flying around - some acceptance with pictures being taken down, but not total, as there is a wish that things could yet be saved with a call, sadness but also a definite sense of defiance

"Yeah you broke my heart without a care

Yeah you ripped it apart

I've been lying

I've been crying to myself in the dark

Took your pictures down off my wall

I can't help but kinda wish you’d call

I’m going out tonight

Gonna wear that dress you like

And if I see you yeah, you’re gonna see I’m doing fine"

That opening verse leads into a power packed chorus

"Tonight I’m gonna shake the break up and wake up

Put on my makeup cause there’s no more you with me

When you see me out

Dancing in the crowd, you’ll get to thinking ‘bout

What could have been

I’ll be the prettiest wreck

That you’ve evеr seen"

It is hard to describe the ferocity at which this tune hits you - there's but a few seconds break before the second verse resumes the wall of sound, where there's a greater degree of acceptance and signs of moving on.

"So I packed up all your stuff and I gave it away

Not gonna lie, I might have criеd, but it gets better each day

Sometimes I just can't get you off my mind

But I’ll forget about you in good time

Yeah its just another night

Gonna throw on something nice

And if I see you out you’re gonna see I’m doing fine"

There's a short little section where it is just Tori and a furious acoustic guitar and for a few seconds you get an inkling as to how this song may have sounded on its initial creation, before the behemoth it has become hits you once more, taking no prisoners!

Can't wait to hear it being blasted across the crowds at Country Calling.

Tori Darke's UK debut is at Country Calling Chelmsford August 14th-16th
