One of our best finds of 2024 was undoubtedly Sophie Rose, her single "Healing In The Burn" stood out as being something special when we were previewing Buckle & Boots 2024 and although we eventually did not make it to the festival to see her play #TEAMw21 made up for it soon after, by covering her London debut. Ahead of a massive opportunity opening for Morgan Wade in Manchester, Sophie is back with a new single "Where Did Your Head Go?".
Once again teaming with the chaps at Puzzle Maker Studios, the results are equally magnificent - the opening is mainly just Sophie's acoustic guitar, although faintly in the mix is a pedal steel making a timely, mood setting appearance for Sophie's opening words. In the space of four lines we find Sophie involved in an intense friendship, one where you spark off each other, following conversations wherever they may lead. The joy of those opening three lines is tempered by the arrival of the fourth, which cleverly leads into the chorus but also suggests that all is not well.
"You say I'm on the edge of my seat
Anticipating every word, like it's the only thing I need
We'd talk in Tangents for hours and never lose our way
Now all I hear is silence, in the space I want to say..."
The chorus sees Sophie asking a number of questions trying to reconnect or find out what is wrong.
"Have you really let go or are you still with me?"
The second verse sees the overall sound build up, Sophie's guitar playing becomes more strident, other instruments start to appear along with the percussion.
"How did we lose our way?"
The bridge sees the same three lines repeated, each time growing stronger and more intense, the final time a wall reverberating power is delivered from Sophie.
"How can you hold space for anyone when you can't hold it for yourself?"
The sound drops to silence before bursting back with both singer and backing instrumentation firing out as powerful a wall of sound as you are likely to hear all year. Sophie's voice at these moments has an unbreakable controlled strength about it which is a pleasure to listen to . Great production work from Danny McMahon and Drea Succi really sees this song go on a journey from start to finish.
