It is almost a year since #TEAMw21 met up with Macartney Reinhardt in Nashville, she hadn't put a foot wrong before that and every subsequent release since has seen her reputation and following grow. Her latest single, co-written with Levon Gray “One Mississippi” by Kane Brown and Peter Daniel Newman “Georgia Girl” by Megan Moroney is "Best You're Ever Gonna Get" is only going to see her remaining on the up escalator.
It clocks in at a relatively short 2 minutes 39, yet Macartney manages to squeeze in a lot, not wasting a second in what proves to be a song of withering put downs and righteous indignation. The sound opens to a mixture of guitars, a neat jangling guitar sound and an overriding guitar riff. Some neat crisp percussion squares things off injecting just the right amount of pace.
As Macartney joins, it is evident that she is not best pleased, and her phrasing conveys the sense of frustration especially when she poses the questions.
"Bet you're not thinking 'bout
The ways you let me down
Boy bet you ain't got a clue
Yeah we've been round and round
Can't figure this thing out
Now tell me what's a girl to do?
Well I can't see you when I wanna
Ain't even met your Mama
Damn, what did I get myself into?"
The chorus contains Macartney's reflections on the relationship, which started with high hopes and ends with distinct chagrin. It's classic pop country and is elevated with a perfect delivery.
"Thought we were perfect
It was working
Well at least for a while
I played my part, you stole my heart
Guess I was cramping your style
Good luck trying to fill that empty bed
Boy I'm The Best You're Ever Gonna Get!"
By the time of the second verse, Macartney seems to be in a better position for being free of some frankly controlling behaviour.
"You don't remember when
I caved and let you win
All of those arguments
Even cut off all my friends
Too bad you couldn't see
All of those meant to be's
They meant the world to me
Now they're just memories"
The final brutal pay off comes towards the end
"Now that I can see you, I don't wanna
Probably would have loved your Mama
But guess she ain't done raising you!"
It all makes for a snappy little single that adds to Macartney's already impressive catalogue.
