Lucy Kitchen is a new name to #TEAMw21 however such was the immediate impact of hearing her latest single "In My Corner" that we immediately wanted to hear more. It is often said that tragedy can be a stimulant to the creative juices and the loss of a partner has found Lucy weaving magic with lyrics inspired by her final conversation with her late husband.
With a stunning simplicity of sound, Lucy is lyrically able to move us and at the same time stir us with her resolve.
"Break my heart with a song
It doesn't matter anyway
Now you've gone, now you've gone away
And baby I'm trying to be stronger
Trying to live how we talked about
Forging a new way through the dirt and the dust."
The backing of banjo and slide guitar mixed with the softest of percussion are all that is needed to provide, given the circumstances, a quite upbeat backing. Lucy imbues her folky delivery with a soft yet determined feel, that really brings everything together.
The chorus really brings home the fact that you can carry on but that you cannot forget and that touching title line becomes so powerful and says so much about their relationship.
"Would you be proud of me and all I've said an done?
But I miss you in my corner, telling me I'm the one"
The second verse mixes the possibility of completing their once shared dream while at the same time conveying that sense of loss
"And maybe I'll go to California like we always talked about
Cos there's still dreams, there's diamonds in the rough
And Baby, It's in the low light, that I miss you most
I've been searching the seasons for your spirit or your ghost"
Ultimately the Lucy that emerges from the song, is one determined to push forward and succeed and this single is surely going to be a springboard for that
"And I'm not going to play small, I'm ready to risk it all
I want shooting stars, that glitter on the snowfall
Champagne and disco balls"
With an accompanying video, filmed in a forest in the "low light" of the lyrics, Lucy brings this creation perfectly to life. There's an album due next year and if it is all of this quality then it should be something to savour.
