SINGLE REVIEW - LAURA BECKWITH - PIPE DOWN
Arriving in time to play it at Country Calling is the new single from Laura Beckwith "Pipe Down". It is without doubt one of the shorter singles of the year clocking in at just under 2 and a half minutes but that is plenty of time for Laura to put someone firmly in their place. It's a fun pithy little single mainly built around some neat guitar work sound wise, though there is an annoying robotic clapping track that we'd quite happily have lived without. Laura is in quite the sassy mood for this single, taking a light hearted approach to what can presumably be a quite tiresome problem.
"You're walking over here like you own the place
Is buy a girl a beer written on my face? - NO!
But you're shooting and you shot
Trying to be the man that I know your not
Oh Baby, this ain't a maybe"
The chorus opens with Laura sounding more like a judge on Dragon's Den, as she then proceeds to dismiss this unrequited suitor with surgical precision.
"It's a no from me
No way in hell you'll ever sweep me - off my feet tonight
You should up and leave, do a one eighty
Cos the only thing you're getting out of me right now
Is "Pipe down!"
There's a certain weariness that opens the vocals to the next verse, this is not the first time and undoubtedly sadly probably not the last that this will occur. The second half of the verse sees Laura delightfully wrap her vocals around the melody.
"As if it wasn't clear you're going to try again
What's between your ears - just arrogance?
You're so far off on your high horse
My God, It's my loss
What a silly girl would let a man like you go?
The final line of the verse comes with some additional laughter after the closing word just to reinforce the irony. With great attention to detail as regards the backing vocals and the auto clapping becoming less obtrusive as the song develops - it uses all of its short timespan to great effect.
