SINGLE REVIEW: KIER - FEET HIT THE GROUND

If pressed to ask which releases in 2026 #TEAMw21 are most anticipating, then the second album from Kier is right up there. Her debut "Welcome To The Strange Life" has only gotten better with age, and the unrecorded songs at live shows that we've heard so far have all been cracking.
If further persuading was needed then settle down to "Feet Hit The Ground", the opening single from that album, and you'll start to understand why.
The cover pic shows Kier dressed for the English summer, looking wistfully out to sea on an empty beach, which is referenced in the opening lines.
There is no lead in, other than Kier's vocals lingering on the words "Oh" "Apology" and "Tide" for a second or two. Musically there is just a lightly strummed acoustic guitar.
"Oh the tide rolls in, like an apology
The rhythm feels familiar, but I know it's just the sea"
The percussion provides a solid back beat, and along with the bass join in with a wonderful keyboard sound to provide a warm soulful effect that welcomes you in. The vocals have a silky smooth feel to them but there is a sadness etched into each syllable. A love lost but not forgotten.
"I call your name, cos it's been so long
And I just like to feel it, rolling off of my tongue
When I can't seem to have it
Is it really so wrong?"
There's something about the moon
It keeps pulling me under, and it's making me wonder
Will it bring me back to you?
There's some definite skillful songwriting going on, for rather than going to the chorus, there final line provides linkage allowing Kier to reminisce. It is so cleverly done that you don't even notice it at first. Looking back though is not just remembering the good times but constant overthinking of how maybe things could have played out differently
"Back to the times when the nights don't end
When it's simply you in the pits of my hand
I'm replaying everything that I should have said
Typing out feelings that I'll never say"
The chorus when it does arrive is suitably contemplative and tinged with sadness.
"Cos what do you do when the noise gets loud?
Where running in place, starts wearing you down
I'll go insane trying to figure it out
Like you can hear me when I'm thinking aloud
I will fall with the rain
Till my feet hit the ground"
The word "Rain" is magnificently elongated, over many syllables.
"I hear your voice, saying goodbye
And I'm angry at the way way we let something so beautiful die
And I can feel your pain, and I know you can mine"
There is a delicious little bit of piano at this point, it's just a few notes but it provides a little mini musical interlude
"But if something's meant to stay
Won't it roll back with the tide?
When I can hardly breathe
I'm clinging on my life"
Kier's delivery moves up a gear with an impassioned delivery which seems a directly pointed message
"Tell me when you get there
How the other half live
How did you find your way in?
Did you pay for your sins?
I'll just sink while you swim
And sit here and think"
The second visit to the chorus is even more dramatic
Throughout there's a certain vulnerability to Kier's vocal which is sheer beauty and at times an undoubted passion in her delivery in this most emotional song, which is what make it such a compelling listen.
Kier's second album due at some point this year!!!
