The final single before her album "All On Red" is released sees Kezia Gill take her most exciting step yet, as sonically, she is given free reign for her new single "Gut Feeling", and she takes full advantage of this freedom. The opening sounds are a guitar riff almost playing a classic Western theme riff, while the percussion has an ultra modern feel.
Kezia's initial vocals are restrained, matching the uncertainty of the lyrics of the first verse
"I should be way to far gone by now
I should be three sheets to the wind
But I can 't seem to shake this feeling
Creeping deep down in my bones
Like there's something going on"
The next couple of lines are uttered without the slightest pause for breath,
"If there's one thing that I know about a woman's intuition
When it speaks you better listen"
They reinforce the uneasy feeling that something is going on and perfectly set up the chorus to eplore that sensation more.
"I just can't explain it, something don't feel right
There's something in the water
Coming in the air tonight
I can't put my finger on the trigger of that gun
I just know I'm leaving, I don't have a reason
But I trust my gut feeling"
It is only really as the second verse starts that the context of Kezia's concerns start to come into focus and of course it is the cause of many a ladies gut feeling - a man! The lyrics tie in with the Western theme and so the talk of "Bullets" and a "Firing line" seem right at home.
"You’ve gotta way of making me think I should stay a while
You’re really working your charm
I learnt my lesson and I won’t be second guessing this time
Once bitten twice shy
One thing that you find dodging bullets over time
Is how to get out of the firing line"
The bridge brings everything properly into perspective, reinforcing that if the nagging feeling in the pit of your stomach tells you something is off, then why not heed it?
"Well there ain’t no shame in walking away
Cos the voice in your heart don’t lie
And there’s nothing worse than ending up hurt
Cos you ignored the signs"
The final run of choruses starts with Kezia's vocals distorted, and the song ends off the back of a final guitar chord being struck.
