Born out of Buckle & Boots, the cover pretty much tells you all you need to know about this single before you hear a word, with George Strait pictured on the wall looking down over the pool table, as our hosts for this tune lean against the bar. The title plays with "Strait" & "Straight" to provide an excuse to link a number of George Strait's songs together to make one new song. It's a traditional songwriters exercise and there's clearly been a lot of fun going on, creating this one.
Musically the best term is perhaps "Knowingly nostalgic" as the sound of classic country backs this run through the Strait catalogue, with the old time fiddle high in the mix in this hands across the ocean collaboration.
The opening verse gives you the feel, with the Strait titles we recognized in bold.
"We like a cold beer Friday night
Shooting whiskey and pool, neon lights
Everyone you count on, in every little honky tonk bar
Well the harder we work, the harder we play
We like to go all night into the day
Easy come, easy go, right or wrong it's just the way we are
The chorus keeps the general theme going.
"We like our country straight down the middle
A little bit of twang
When we hear a steel and fiddle we get carried away
There's always blue clear sky even if it's going to rain
Yes it's a love without end Amen
We like our "Country Strait"
It a good time romp, that lovers of George Strait can have some fun with as they pick out more titles.
