Fast rising, Kentucky born, Nashville based Elizabeth Nicholls seems set to become a firm favourite with UK fans with her light hearted sassy new single "Oh The Things Men Do". With an appearance at C2C 2026 coming, little over a year since her first single, she's also squeezed in an Opry appearance so is quite the hot ticket.
Mixing together a classic country style tune with some 21st century lyrics lets Elizabeth make some wry observations on the tactics used by men in their efforts to charm her into bed! There are a couple of things that immediately mark this as a single destined for great things, firstly the assured vocals and then the crowd singalong chorus soon to be echoed wherever it is sung to knowing nods from the ladies and awkward shuffling from the men!
Musically there's really not a lot going on to create the classic country sound, the pedal steel and percussion do most of the heavy lifting yet the sound seems complete. It is mainly because Elizabeth is grabbing the attention front of house.
The open verse is a quick checklist, the words in brackets being the running additional comments added as asides.
"He'll shave his face, he'll take a shower (Wow)
He'll wear a nice shirt and buy some flowers (For me?)
He'll make a bed, he never makes
He'll spray cologne, he never sprays (Tsh, tsh)
I talk, talk, talk, he pretends to listen
Say my Dad's a Pastor, suddenly he's Christian (Amen)
Swears up and down he's a feminist
And that's just my top ten list"
The chorus as mentioned comes with the crowd singalong inbuilt. There's a slightly unsubtle lingering over the first syllable of the word "Horizontal" but it's otherwise good fun and comes with its own "La di da" section at the end.
"Oh, the things men do to get laid
All the money they'll lose to gеt laid
Nothing they won't do or say
To get to first, second, third, fourth base
Ain't it crazy the lengths they'll go
Just to get a girl horizontal?
Anywhere, anyway
Any time, any place
Oh, the things men do to get laid"
The second verse mixes Helen of Troy with modern day texting which is not the usual country combination.
"It used to be a thing men started wars over
Am I making things up or did the bar get lower?
Now all we get is a "What ya doin'?" text
"Wyd" means S-E-X
They'll marry real quick, break a vow even quicker
Ain't that smooth but there ain't nothing slicker
Than a man with a plan looking pretty type A
If the plan is to land this plane"
The bridge has more home truths with the final line spoken in exasperation!!
"Stretch the truth to get laid
Say that he's 6'2 to get laid
Does he realize he has to take off the boots to get laid?"
The final chorus sees Elizabeth take the opening few lines to just the bare minimum of acoustic guitar before the full band returns.
