One of the most interesting figures #TEAMw21 have bumped into this year is undoubtedly Dylan Taylor. We met at the Jericho Tavern where she was supporting Morganway and was the most charming, enthusiastic person you could ever hope to meet. It was only after returning home from the venue that we realised quite how much excellent material this little lady has recorded.
Her new single "Danger" is as uncompromising as it gets and is all the more absorbing for it's outright openness. Dylan says it "was originally more of a diary entry than a song. A rant inspired by the misogynists of the world.", musically and lyrically it is a gem and more than delivers on what it was that intrigued us most when this tiny figure, with a mop of wild curly hair, wearing an old cardigan entertained us in Oxford.
A steady drum beat and guitar makes for quite a pleasant opening, it gives little idea of what lies ahead on this journey. As Dylan joins in, she is addressing someone and most definitely she is not pleased, barely pausing for a breath as line after line is fired out. There's an occasional male backing vocal in the background but make no mistake this is Dylan's tour de force.
"I drew a line, I drew a line in the sand
You broke through with your bare hand
Beating on your chest like a big big man
I don't understand where you get the confidence
You're nothing but a prince
Handed down his money, handed down his wealth
Handed down his looks handed down his health
You bled me dry
And left me for dead under the Tennessee sky
How baby I thought we were more than just flies
Dancing on the bedroom wall
Everybody's wrong every now and then
Except the liars and cheaters out here playing pretend
I'm swinging from the wires, falling through the cracks
So tell me what's the point in holding back?
The chorus as such should certainly be heeded, Dylan is not someone to be messed with.
I want to kiss you want to hold you tight
I want to miss you, want to love you right
But you don't really care, there's no soul in your eyes
Baby I made you, I brought you to life
Don't call me god, no call me savior,
I’ll put you down, just like your maker
There's now way out sooner of later
You'll find out who's really in danger!"
There's a guitar solo that acts as a break before Dylan set off on another long rich narrative stretch - it it totally unmissable, you find yourself barely able to process a line before the next one hits.
