SINGLE REVIEW: CHARLIE WORSHAM - WRAP MY PORCH AROUND

Arriving just in time for Country Calling is the latest single from Charlie Worsham, always seemingly beloved much more in the UK as a solo performer than he is in his homeland. Now a family man there's plenty of seemingly autobiographical stuff in the lyrics while the tune is pure Charlie.

Built around bass, percussion and Charlie's exemplary guitar work, you are pretty much reeled in within the opening few seconds before Charlie even sings a word. When he does we enter a delightful homespun world.

"Since we met the gears been turning

I'm saving every dollar I'm earning

To put it down on a pawn shop ring

Tie some cans to a c-10 limousine

Hey babe, if ya like the notion

Let's put the plan in motion"

The chorus is great fun with a howl going up after the second line and it all seem totally plausible - what else would be on Charlie's radio but the Grand Ole Opry?

You and me in a fixer up

Hound dog howling in the yard

Drinking wine from a Dixie cup

Wishing on southern stars

Grand Ole Opry on the radio

Half acre on the edge of town, yeah

That sounds like something I can wrap my porch around"

If the first verse was an aspiration the second sees thing a little more contented

One name on the mail box two on a tree

Stars and stripes waving in the breeze

Hand picked daisy in your hair

Hot mama looks pretty in a rocking chair

Gonna steal another kiss when the sun goes down

You know what I'm talking 'bout"

and that after an instrumental break directly leads on to the developments that make up the third verse

"Well, we make a lil magic in that bedroom

Might have to paint the guest room blue

Or pink

Baby, now what ya think about"

If the first version was not country enough then there is also a Bluegrass version with the Travellin' McCourys to sink your teeth into. It comes with more fiddles and mandolins, additional backing vocals and more human dog howling noises. Equally good fun and a great way to reintroduce yourself back to the sound of Charlie Worsham, surely destined to be one of the most welcomed of all performers appearing at Country Calling
