Never more at home than when letting his vocals ooze over a Country soul sound, for his new single "Girl Like You", Brian Collins finds himself in exactly that position. With a rich organ sound, a horn section and a band including members of the Zac Brown Band and Govt Mule, there is almost little for Brian to add, to make this a success, so when he give his all, the only thing to be done is lie back and let the warm sound wash over you.
"As I walk through this life, so alone
A rolling soul that's lost its way
Till I saw you there that day
And I remember you,
Darling you, you stole my heart away
And I'm lost for words to say
In all these years, I was waiting...."
Brian leaves the last word each verse hanging as it leads perfectly into the chorus which is where the soul extravaganza kicks in.
"For a girl like you, for a girl like you my darling
It's a natural instinct baby, and I would do anything
Oh for a girl like you"
Happy songs are notoriously harder to write than sad ones, they can end up be self serving and embarrassingly mawkish, this however only ever comes across as heartfelt.
"And I believe there's a time
When a man must do what he can to find the one
Will he ever fall in love?
Seems so lucky girl to have you with me
Inside this world, where one is not enough
And all these years I was waiting ....."
The bridge sees Brian give true appreciation for the position that he finds himself in
"You and me baby, we're all wrapped up in this love
You came along and you saved me and I want to thank you, thank you thank you"
Just when you think it can't get any richer, it is is time to wheel out Vanessa Olivarez on backing vocals for the final chorus, to up the soul quotient to breaking point. As the nights get darker and colder, no need to turn up the thermostat or put another log on the fire, just let Brian Collins bring a little warmth into your life and maybe earn a browning point or two by playing this loud!
