The third Monday in January is often referred to a "Blue Monday", the saddest day of the year, it's a combination caused, by the usually bleak weather, the return to routine after the festive break and the associated bills coming in as you wait for payday. Arriving as something of a cheery antidote to those feelings is Brian Collins with his new single "Better Days".
Pictured on the cover picture, under a tree glancing up with the look of a man who is satisfied with his lot, Brian plays back a lot of homespun wisdom that deep in our hearts we know is absolute common sense, yet when mired in your particular crisis it is the last thing that seems to spring to mind to give us a little perspective on our prevailing issue.
The first half of the opening verse is played out over mainly bass and percussion, it sees Brian address some of the issues above
"When the world feels as cold as December
Close your eyes and just remember
That seasons change and sorrow will melt away
In your pockets you’ve got nothing but change
I’ve never known happiness to cost a thing
Just be grateful for the people that you love"
The second half of the verse saw the arrival of keyboards, and closed with the arrival of a funky little piece of picked out guitar.
The pre chorus sees Brian use the title to remind us of perspective - things will improve. The fact that he adds this message to a warm soulful groove only makes it seem all the more believable.
"If you feel your luck is running out
And every good part of your life is headed south
Just remember there’ll be better days, better days"
It feels like it's a personal mantra, and it is undoubtedly a positive attitude to take through life.
"Cause I can feel it getting better soon
All my grey skies are turning blue
And I know everything will be ok"
The bridge also seeks to add further comfort, addressing another of life's worries.
"Nothing ever stays the same
Don’t be afraid of a little change"
With a final "I know we’re gonna be ok", Brian signs off on this most positive of singles.
Better Days are certainly coming for Brian Collins this summer as he has joined the growing roster of acts performing at Country Calling 2026
