SINGLE REVIEW: ANGEL SNOW - MIDNIGHT SUN

Having caught Angel Snow many moons ago at the Green Note, on a memorable night with Matthew Perryman-Jones, we've been determined to catch up with her again but recent tours have seemingly clashed against vacations or other previously booked gigs. Fortunately the internet algorithms have been kind to us this time and have given us fair warning of her upcoming visit, even it is was a little tardy in highlighting her marvellous hypnotic new single "Midnight Sun" released at the start of May.

#TEAMw21 were lured in then by "Lie Awake" and having missed her appearance at C2C - this time round "Midnight Sun" has given the impetus to make sure that Angel's next visit to these shores will not go unheralded by us.

Opening to a stark acoustic guitar, playing a recurring refrain,Angel overlays it with a most hypnotic vocal that instantly reels in the listener as it creates a definite atmosphere. There's a certain mysterious quality about it

"You think I could lie about this thorn in my side

For so long I’d gone abandoned the truth

And if you believe what was once so hard to perceive

May this next dealt hand take it easy on you"

The second verse arrives to some heartbeat like percussion and some additional keyboards, yet it remains as intriguing as ever.

"Ain’t it funny how fame leaves you feeling the shame

Words cut so deep no remedy in sight

And your heart might say I remember your name

But you left me in the backseat of your mind"

The chorus seems to be a warning about the passage of time,

"Try to learn while you’re young

You can’t outshine the midnight sun"

While the final verse packs in some optimistic advice

"Memories might fade re-emerge in the shade

Of your life when things seem gentle and true

Faces and light pass like ships in the night

But the love you feel you take it with you"

It all goes to remind us why we found Angel Snow so enigmatic in the first place

With an eclectic set of UK tour dates in early October - go see if Angel Snow is passing your way
