Gasoline & Matches - Afraid To Fall

It's been a while since we've heard from Gasoline & Matches but they are back with a new single "Afraid To Fall" that seems set to make waves. It marks the first time that Stephen's vocals have been more up front in the mix than Sally Rea's, although both sing throughout.

It is also their most straight forward pop country tune to date, with the drum beat dictating a fast pace. Having 2 guitarists in the band means that theirs is a sound that is always going to feature prominently, our personal favourite sound though are the sparingly used castanet flourishes that bring a smile each time we hear them.

The song itself is about the dividing line between being friends and lovers - and being willing to risk all for the ultimate prize knowing that there is no return if it doesn't work out or worse the possibility that the feelings are not reciprocated.

The lyrics capture this perfectly

"Am I wasting my time? Am I a last resort who's waiting in line?"

The feelings of doubt are even more blatant in the chorus

"Have you ever thought about me?

Have you ever talked about me?

I really need to know.

Have you ever thought about it?

Woke up in the night? I doubt it."

At times the track wears it's 80's influences proudly - there is a hint of Bryan Adams in there and a nod maybe to Jackson Browne's "Somebody's Baby" but it is all done with such panache and a knowing nod.

There seems to be a hint of resignation towards the end, suggesting the risk might be too great - but in the very next line the flame is still alight.

"Deep down I know the truth.

Like the seasons change, you might too"

With the Covid break having put the breaks on their original release schedule - we're expecting 2023 to be a busy year of activity for Gasoline & Matches

Afraid to Fall is released on June 2nd

Gasoline & Matches will headline The Paddock Stage at Buckle & Boots on Friday at 22:05

They are also hosting a Songwriters Round on Friday on The Paddock Stage 12:30 - 14:00 along with Namywa, James Berryman & Kylie Price.
