SINGLE REVIEW: GARETH NUGENT - LIFE'S A FIRE

GARETH NUGENT - LIFE'S A FIRE

Introduced with "Life is a fire - We're just a flame" is the new single from Gareth Nugent.

The follow up line curiously is

"It's better to burn out than fade away"

Curious as it is the line from Neil Young's "Hey Hey My My (Out Of The Blue)" that Kurt Cobain of Nirvana used in his suicide note, which is an entirely different darker song and probably not the vibe Gareth was going for!

Technically "Life's A Fire" is a bit of smorgasbord of styles, there's a bit of folk, a bit of Irish and a smidgin of Country all fused together into one gloriously toe tapping tune blessed with an uptempo backbeat and an accordion and fiddle that will let you forgive anything.

Gareth has a storytelling technique that breaks the fourth wall addressing us directly at times like in the fourth line of the first verse.

"I was tripping through the City streets as light was fading fast

A little worse for wear when I spied that pretty lass

and I followed her down as she sang dancing to the shore

I'll tell you a little more"

There is also at moments a most unusual turn of phrase

"Well she moved across the sand like a swan on a lake

Her eyes they shone like diamonds - my bread she didn't take!!

It's probably best to put aside the lyrical investigation too far and enjoy "Life Is A Fire" for what it is which is a barnstorming bit of fun that should get any party started.
