Sasha McVeigh has now been in the US so long that many recent converts to the UK Americana scene may not even realise that she is one of ours. She left for Nashville to follow her dreams and the highs and lows of those aspirations are laid out on "The Road I'm On" her latest single.
Always blessed with an ear for a good tune, her "I Stand Alone" debut album still sounds good to this day, this latest release sees Sasha supported by a well drilled band, blessed with a heavenly organ sound
The lyrics paint the reality of life chasing your ambition - it's not glorified, it's not moaned about it is just Sasha explaining the realities of it how it is.
"It's 200,000 miles on an old Dodge caravan
Motel 6 and Super 8's,
Checking out and checking in"
Snatching a cup of coffee before hitting the road to the next gig. is all part of the journey.
With age and presumably a ton of gigs Sasha's voice has now developed an even richer timbre than she had before she left. She also left with a steely determination and that shines through in the lyrics.
"There's dead ends and there's detours - but no turn has ever been wrong
That's the road I'm on"
As much as she acknowledges that she is in the right place
"It's taken me to where I need to be"
There is a moment of reflection of the cost - the price to be paid for such an adventure.
"When you're heading by at 85, you miss a thing or two
Birthdays and baby showers, there's a lot of life to lose
But every small town that I get to see
All the people there that I get to meet
Every dive bar crowd
Reminds me there's nothing I'd rather do"
A smashing single all round - As Sasha says
"It ain't about the destination it's the journey" - let's hope she completes this journey in style.
