Continuing with her plan of releasing a single a month for a whole year is Hannah White. After challenging #TEAMw21 into having do a bi-lingual review for her last single, "Nobody Minds" is something different entirely. It is interesting to note that it was mastered at Abbey Road, for when it begins with just a strummed acoustic guitar for company, Hannah seems to be in an empty room.
"I swear I hear a calling
I swear I hear a bell
I’ve been here since dawn
And you’ve been here as well"
The first chorus is dispatched in this equally basic musical set up before the sound is finally fleshed out a bit more.
The arrival of bass and percussion, just before the minute mark adds a certain warmth to the track yet it remains a little lo-fi,
"I’m laid up with an infection
I can’t see a thing
There’s no getting no prescription
In this place we’re in"
it is the arrival of the backing vocals for the second chorus that really turn this into the little gem that it is, as it seems to trigger all sorts of magic to happen. The chorus a stirring anthem to the working class.
"Nobody minds us, Nobody minds us, Baby we mind ourselves
Nobody minds us, Nobody minds us, Baby we mind ourselves"
The instrumental break sees Hannah's vocals buried in the mix, almost overlooked very much like the people she singing about.
Musically refusing to stand still, the band fades and Hannah is supported by only her own backing vocals incessantly chanting, making themselves heard even though still buried deep in the mix. it is only for the final choruses that all the components come together, Hannah, the band, the backing vocals and buried vocals all together as one.
These singles drop like little presents each month, there's no telling what the subject matter will be or what they will sound like other than Hannah's high personal quality threshold ensuring that they will never be dull or routine.
